My broccoli plants are flowering instead of coming to a head. Any suggestions on what I should do to encourage bigger growth.

Broccoli is a cool weather crop. If you recently had a spike in temperatures it could have caused the broccoli to bolt faster. Keep the plants well watered and mulch them very well. This should help to keep them cool and give more time for the heads to grow.

If you're starting your plants from seed, be sure to sure to start them indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Starting them from seed after the last frost will push their maturity date too far into warmer weather to form good heads.

Or try planting it as a fall crop instead. Sow your seed 3 months before your first frost date. The plants grow well in warm weather, but the heads form best when the nights are cool. Broccoli will tolerate light frost. Happy eating!
The great thing about gardening is that you always get a chance to start over!

Thanks, I live in south GA, so now I know why they are blooming. I'll plant earlier next year.
