  Ants!!!
Posted by: WJA - 03-23-2006, 02:24 PM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (1)

Which ants do you have? With the exception of Fire Ants most all other species are beneficial in the garden and all you need do is slightly amend the environment if they get out of hand. Ants, at least in my experience, nest where it is dry and increasing soil moisture levels enough will cause them to move.

What new plants/products are you trying in 2006?
Posted by: IntrepidMeredith - 03-21-2006, 05:24 PM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (2)

I am trying a hot drying/ristras-Paprika Supreme. I'm hoping to make my own paprika. I've never done this before but it sounds really easy. If it works out I plan on putting the paprika in little bottles and giving them out for Christmas presents.

  Fuzzy Red Rasberries
Posted by: LindaR - 03-18-2006, 09:01 AM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (1)

does your berries have good air circulation? Sounds like a fungi.A fungi need warm temperatures and humid conditions,Anything you can do to keep the above groundparts of the plants dry will be to your advantage. Also good drainage, avoid over head watering,if the fungal diseases were a problem in previous years, you might have to apply lime-sulfur spray in the spring when the first leaves are 1/4"-1/2" long.

How To Get Ivy To Cover Whole Lawn?
Posted by: tomsggm - 03-14-2006, 06:18 PM - Forum: Gardening - No Replies

Hello: I just need to ask a question!I
am far from a Gardener but I have a front lawn and
I am to old to run out and cut it all the time,
so I killed the grass. There is IVY all around
where the lawn was and it is closing up the gap in
the lawn, there is still a large bare spot. How
can I get the Ivy to grow faster over this bald
spot? Can I use the Old Ivy to grow new Ivy on this
bare spot? Thank You, Tom

  Controlling spider mites
Posted by: mltritt - 03-12-2006, 06:10 PM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (1)

Understanding the life cycle of the buggers will help figure out how to control them. Most often they are not much of a problem unless were they are is quite arid, dry. In low humidity areas they get thirsty and suck more plant sap, which is an aphrodisiac for them so they mate more producing more young, so your first line of defense is to raise the humidity around the plants most easily accomplished by misting. Insecticidal soap sprays can also help control these buggers. A last resort spray would be something with Neem Oil in it.

  Onion sets
Posted by: flower_child - 03-07-2006, 02:53 PM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (1)

I live in zone 5, and a gardener once told me to plant onion sets on Good Friday. Now Good Friday may come in March or April, depending on the Easter calendar, so, anytime from mid March should be okay. Since you live in a warmer zone, you could plant earlier. Plant the sets shallow if you want large onions, deeper if you want to use green onions.

  Mole problem

First, make sure you have moles and not voles. Some people confuse them and they are quite different. Can you describe what they're doing or what they look like?
