  Ornamental Grasses for Containers
Posted by: Freckles03 - 04-16-2010, 03:45 PM - Forum: Plants - Replies (1)

Well if you want your container grass to survive in winter you need to choose two level lower grass. I mean, as you are in zone 6, you have to choose grass suitable for zone four. You may go for big blue stem, blue oat grass, June grass.

Bright Coral Pink blooms are traffic stoppers!
Large blossoms thickly cover the plant in Spring, making it very bright.

  IrisRhizones
Posted by: Pippi - 03-29-2010, 11:16 AM - Forum: Plants - Replies (1)

Pippi,
Best way to start them this late is in nursery pots of potting soil, with Iris Rhizones deep enough to cover the rhizones but slightly under the soil. Water well, put outside in a protected area, water or let rain on. If you leave them in the pot a few weeks until it warms up more and then plant them they will do better. Either way they will not bloom this year as they are suppose to be planted in the fall.

  What I love about gardening
Posted by: SWMOgardens - 03-28-2010, 06:49 PM - Forum: Attracting wildlife - Replies (12)

I love it when wildlife loves my garden as much as I do. This Mallard is right next to my front walk.

Do I have to charge sales tax for items I sell on eBay?
Posted by: Menaffoge - 03-27-2010, 12:34 AM - Forum: Gardening - No Replies

Hi everyone

I bought something on Ebay, but it was shipped to my old address. It was not returned to the post office by the occupant at my old address. What do I do? Isn't that a federal offense to keep someone else's mail? Help!

  Beaked Hazelnut Bush
Posted by: JB_Old_Hippy - 03-20-2010, 07:30 PM - Forum: Attracting wildlife - No Replies

I plan on planting a couple Beaked Hazelnut bushes and an Elder Berry bush to attract wildlife to my backyard. Has anyone planted a Beaked Hazelnut bush?

  Gazebos in the garden
Posted by: SWMOgardens - 03-17-2010, 03:25 PM - Forum: Design - Replies (1)

Gazebos are a wonderful addition to your garden. I like to make mine look like it is a part of the garden by using evergreens to blend the gazebo into my garden.

  Mail orders
Posted by: amberbeer - 03-13-2010, 06:43 PM - Forum: Gardening - Replies (2)

I ordered 80 Purple Plumb trees, and other plants from Richard Owen Nursery last season. Only about 10 survived. They looked quite dead when they arrived, nevertheless, I followed instructions to the letter. I wrote Mr Richard Owen a letter and he sent replacements. It's quite a lot of work lining and preparing for so many plants (I don't doubt that many of you will think welcome to the club). However, to be sure planting replacements correctly, I hired a knowledgeable groundsman. Everything was as perfect as we could manage using ideal potting base - even the weather cooperated. The plants were soaked on arrival and in the ground within two days. Although these looked better than the first shipment only about four survived. surely, I wrote Mr.Owens "you would know if your plants were alive or not before you shipped them". Of the two shipments only 15 survived through October. I requested a reply but thus far nothing. After subscribing to Garden Gate, I thought to post the experience for evaluation by more knowledgeable people than I. Thanks I would appreciate comments - Michael B.

  Peonies
Posted by: Janet214 - 03-13-2010, 12:04 PM - Forum: Basics - Replies (1)

Janet,
You need to start peonies with their roots or eyes planted in the ground just barely below the ground. They don't start very well from cuttings in peat pots. Plant in the fall or early spring. If you are starting from someone elses peonies, dig up their large clump , take a sharp knife and cut them apart getting a large bunch to plant but not too large.

  Peony

Peonies are best planted directly in the garden in spring or fall. Place the roots so the reddish eyes are 1-2" below the soil surface. They may take a couple of years before they start blooming, but once they do, you'll be in for quite a show!
